In this segment, we want to highlight some of the most unique city centers in the United States. These epitomes of human connection have lasted for over a century, and continue to attract both locals and travelers alike.
We'll be introducing some of our community coalitions with a brief synopsis of their impact and what they do to keep history alive. Explore the beauty and history of these main streets all from the comfort of home (and maybe, one day, make a trip to see them!).
Macon, Georgia
In 1996, historic downtown Macon suffered heavily from dilapidated buildings and boarded up storefronts. The preservation program, called Newtown Macon, set its sights on restoring the city center into something that would be enjoyed for generations to come.
Since its beginning, Newtown Macon has successfully added 67 storefronts and over 1000 residents to the downtown area. The district boasts diverse business ownership, events catering to everyone, and that revitalizing old town feeling that comes with historic visions brought to life.

Metuchen, New Jersey
Prior to the year 2016, Metuchen's historic district's vacancy rate was at a high of 22 percent. Thanks to Metuchen Downtown Alliance, that number has dropped to 4 percent in just nine years. This coalition has aided in the rehabilitation of 104 buildings (with a financial reinvestment total of a whopping $168 million).
Despite being a relatively new program, the Alliance has vastly supported the conservation of Metuchen. Their primary focus has been the implementation of family-friendly events and programming that showcases the multi-faceted histories of the town's residents.

Madison, Indiana
"Come for a visit, stay for a lifetime" has the unofficial motto of this specific restoration project. Since 1979, the Madison Main Street Program has steadily worked at securing a thriving future for their historic district. Because of the program's mission, 46 new businesses have been successfully integrated into the city center.
More than just the businesses they represent, each building has been carefully remodeled in adherence with time-honored architectural designs. The careful authenticity with which the town has been restored is boldly displayed in the tangible life of the district.
